What was a healing plant or herb five thousand years ago is still a healing plant or herb. Because great confidence was placed in them, Witches and physicians of the ancient world were expected to know their herbs. Plants gave healing powers to those who studied them, worked with them, and respected them. In many lands and in many times, healers spent a good part of their lives in the field and forest gathering green medicines. They remembered and discribed what they learned passing it on.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Today we have the opportunity to benefit from the accumulated herbal wisdom of the ages. This advantage allows us to peer back through history, harvesting for our own benefit only those herbs that have stood the test of time. But even the herbal uses that didn't pan out are fascinating. While the story of healing herbs has it's comic episodes, it is also a dramatic story of human sacrifice, complete with medical hero's, men and women whose work deserves to be recognized. Much of this credit in my opinion should go the the Witches of the past because they are the ones who essentially began the work of learning and understanding herbs and their benefits.
Magick is a force utilising power, wisdom and knowledge. It is both more and less powerful than the ignorant can suppose. Magick is not a power to be used in place of our other powers, meaning those of our physical, mental or emotional abilities. Nor is it a crutch for the weak or an ego-boost for the inadequate. INCENSE: <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">Incense has long had associations with magick and witchcraft, as indeed it is used commonly by many other religions. The use of Incense in witchcraft is threefold :

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">(1) It conditions the mind by stimulating our senses of smell.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">(2) In connection with spells, it draws down the spirits through it's magickal association with the elements of Air.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">(3) According to ancient beliefs, when a spell is done. It raises the spell up into the ether and sends it on it's way.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In magick, the type of incense used needs to correspond with the nature of the spell being worked. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Often flowers are kept on the altar as an offering. Anything that is beautiful or special to you, or symbolic of the purpose for the offering, can be offered.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Since the Divine lives in all things, anything you harm is an injury to the Divine. And pragmatically, you'll be giving the offerings to the Earth later.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Offerings are one of the most overlooked practices in Wicca today, yet one of increasing spiritual power and importance.
SALT WATER: <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A small bowl of water with salt dissolved in it, for cleansing. This would be appropriate in the centre. Alternatively, the altar chalice may be used to hold the salt water.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Water and salt are both purifying agents, not only in the physical realm but the energetic as well. Salt water also represents the energies of earth and water united, the ocean womb which gave birth to all life on the planet. BESOM ( WITCHES BROOM ): <span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Many pagan traditions have the bridal couple, jump across the broom, a symbol of fertility (old bit of agricultural fertility magic), to signify the establishment of their new household. The brooms are usually decorated for the occasion and then kept in a place of honor in the home.
In many Wicca handfasting(marriage) rituals, couples often jump over the broom if they want children.
Historically, brooms made great gifts for weddings or handfastings. Just add a little ribbon, some flowers, and your are good to go. No wrapping needed. Every new home needs a new broom!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Witches use brooms in magick and ritual. The pagan broom or "besom" is used in ritual for cleansing the general circle or ritual area. The besom is sweeping away the psychic dirt, getting the area purified for the ritual at hand.
A Witch may begin a ritual by sweeping the area with the magick broom, visualising the psychic dirt being swept out of the ritual area. The sweeping also helps to get the mind ready for the ritual, quieting the mind and narrowing the focus for the witch. The besom is a purifier and is related to the element of Water.
AIR: This element is all aound us. It is what we breathe and live in, it fills all the holes and spaces it can. Without it we could not live in our form. It blows in the wind and brings great inspiration and change. The birds soar through the air, bringing their beautyand songs. The trees sing as well when the wind rustles through their leaves.

The air teaches us many lessons. The most important lesson it teaches us even though we cannot see something, that doesn't mean that it is not there. It exists and we can feel it as it moves around us or we move witin it. Yet it cannot be seen. It is a great lesson teaching us to have faith in the unseen.

FIRE: the eat of the sun, the molten, core of the earth and the burning desire; these all are part of the element fire. Fire warms us, cooks our food, and can burn us the fires of passion stir us into action and reaction. Fire fuels our love and desire and flares with our anger. Within us the fires burn, as they can burn without. When used with care, fire is our friend; when missed used it can be our bitter enemy.

We can work with the element fire in many ways. We can flame our passions within or cook over an open fire. We can use fire in ritual and meditation. As with all the other elements. It is always with us and stronger in some of us than with others.

WATER: The element water, swirling in the tides, dripping in the rains,and flowing in our veins, is with us always. Our bodies are made up mostly of water., so it is prevelant in each of us, though it may not be the element we work strongly with. Water brings inspiration, wisdom, peace, tranquility, cleansing and many other qualities. It fills the rivers and streams and brings life to all things on the planet.

There are many ways to work with the element of water. You can splash in the waters of a strem or ocean, drink a glass of water, go swimming in a pool or use water in meditation. Listening to the rain, to the flowing waves of the ocean, or the rush of a rivercan itself change our consciousness and relax us.

EARTH: This element exits all around us. It is the solid element which makes up the firmament below us. In the human body it can be seen as the bones.

Though solid in form the earth can also be pliant. The soil gives way to the seed from which plants grow with the aid of the sun and rain. The earth, nourishing.

By connecting with the element of earth we learn of its strengths and iportance in our lives. It is a source of nutrients in our food as well as the materials we use to build and create things. It is our home upon which we and all life thrives. Earth is part of nature that has alot to teach us.

SPIRIT: Called by many names, the Goddess etc. Spirit flows through all living things. It is what makes a bird a bird, a tree a tree, an animal an animal, and a person a person. It grants us our consciousness and is the part of us that will go on long after our body has passed from one plane of existance and turn to dust. It is through our own shining spirits that we are able to work with the goddess's inspiration, and speak to the spirits of our dear departed ancestors. It is part of us that makes us complete and brings us wisdom.

This eleusive element cannot be seen through normal sight, nor can it be felt, except internally. It is a special part of us that allows us not only to want to percieve the Goddess, but also gives us ability to grow as spirtual beings. Spirit is the tie that binds the elements together to create life. All the elements are important but without this most important element our interactions with others would not only be limited; they would be most likely non-existant.Melanie Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512739989498401376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435923737464768324.post-77940049249584969582011-08-26T11:20:00.000-07:002011-08-26T13:41:32.262-07:00PAGAN HOLIDAYS ( THE CYCLES OF NATURE )

Wicca is a deep appreciation and awe in watching the sunrise or sunset, the forest in the light of a glowing moon, a meadow enchanted by the first light of day. It is the morning dew on the petals of a beautiful flower, the gentle caress of a warm summer breeze upon your skin, on your face. Wicca is the fall of colorful autumn leaves, and the softness of the winter snow. It is the song of the birds and other creatures of the wild. It is being in the presence of mother earths nature and being humble in reverence. When we are in the temple of the lord and lady, we are not prone to arrogance of human technology as they touch our souls. To be a witch is to be a healer, a teacher, a seeker, a giver, and a protector of all things.Melanie Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512739989498401376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435923737464768324.post-19829741115383942852011-08-25T12:38:00.000-07:002011-08-26T13:46:53.426-07:00WE ARE ONE WITH THE PLANET

We are one with everything around us and everything is part of us. This is because the Divine creative force (Goddess) created us all from the same stuff. This bond of creations is what links us together. We all have the divine spark, as do all living things, and the earth itself. We all create in our own ways. Some create words and music, some great works of art. Even the earth moves, shifts and creates every single day. Everything on earth is made up of the same atoms in different combinations. We are all made of the same stuff as the earth, the plants, the animals, the planets and the stars, but we are just put together using different combinations.

In order to find our way to enlightment and spiritual fulfillment we seek, we need to live our path everyday. we need to take time to celbrate, to interact with nature and follow it's cycles, and we need to learn to quiet ourselves and listen to the lessons revealed to us by he Goddess on a daily basis. We must take note of the lessons we are taught so that they will build upon each other and teach us the meaning of life that we seek.
If we look around, if we listen, if we truly seek then all the answers are there for us, and we can find true happiness, spiritual fulfillment and enlightment.Melanie Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02512739989498401376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435923737464768324.post-52978665610711789032011-08-22T14:21:00.000-07:002011-08-26T13:51:32.121-07:00What Is Witchcraft ?
Few words have created more images in people's minds than the word "witch" What started out in ancient times strictly as a nature religion, dedicated to worshipping the sun, moon, stars and other unexplainable forces such as lighting, thunder, and earthquakes, grew to encompass "gods" whom one had to address for help or favors.

Those who knew how to interact with these "powers" were considered "the wise ones." They also tended to know a lot about the uses of herbs and other plants, and thus were also healers of the tribe. That wisdom was called "Wicca," or the craft of the wise. "Wicca craft" eventually became witchcraft. When Christianity rose to become the established and acceptable religion, witchcraft was termed evil simply because it coexist, and thus began ages of persecution and accusations linking witchcraft with "the devil." All of this was a construct of the medieval church.

It embraces the same moral concepts that most religions do (or Should.) Witches ' magick when emotionall and properly motivated, magick spells are truly a kind of prayer appealing to the "Mother Goddess" or her younger incarnation. Aradia. But witches' magick has nothing to do with the false stage magic we know. It is much more powerful than that, much more scared.

How did this fantastic image of witches and their craft come about? At the very dawn of civilization, society was organized along matriarchal lines. That is, the dominant figure was the woman because she gave birth and took care of the necessities of life, the home, and the sick, and her skills were more varied and sophisticated than those of the male, whose main purpose was to provide food and shelter and defend the community against attack by outsiders. From this position of dominance, as time went on, the matriarch developed into the prietess.

The early religion of western and northern Europe was a nature religion in which the forces of the world around man were considered manifestations of the divine power. In this respect, the early religion was pantheistic in that all of nature was considered an expression of the deity.

But the priestess needed concrete focal points for the flock. The image of the Goddess, representing the forces in nature, developed and was eventually given a companion in the Horned God, representing the male principal. To the contemporaries of this civilization, the faith was simply "religion," but after the advent of Christianity it became known as "the Old Religion" to emphasize the contrast. To this day, witches rarely refer to their ancient faith as "witchcraft" but prefer the term "The Old Reiligion" or simply "the Craft."

What deities did the practitioners of the Old Religion worship? No, not the devil. The devil had not been born at that time.

Now, the figure of a man wearing the tall headgear of a stag or bull was later used as" proof "that the Old Religion worshipped the devil. Devils, of course, have horns, and therefore priests were in reality the Evil one himself or at least a fellow dressed up as the devil.

Unfortunately, or, more likely. fortunately, the Old Religion had no use for the position of "the devil." It was, and is one of the main tenets of the Old Religion that man is born innocent, not guilty, and that whatever guilt or sin he ends up with at the end of his earthly life he has to blame only on himself for.
